Scaling & Root Planing

Scaling and root planing represent the standard way to treat gum disease. Acting together, they form a two-step treatment that takes one to two dental visits. The initial scaling removes plaque and tartar from your teeth and the area below your gumline. From there, the second step – root planing – smooths out your tooth roots. This move ensures your gums reattach to your teeth and protects your smile. That way, the tissues can continue to support each tooth.

Laser Periodontal Treatment

If your case is severe, we can give you laser periodontal treatment along with your scaling and root planing. This service relies on a method known as Laser ENAP (Excisional New Attachment Procedure.) Using it, we’ll get rid of any damaged gum tissue with a dental laser. The laser’s light will only target your infected gum tissue, killing bad bacteria on contact. So, treatment is exact, involves less bleeding, and lets you heal more quickly.

Antibiotic Treatment

After scaling and root planing, our team may perform an antibiotic treatment as well. It would have you take special antibiotics that fight off your gum infection. These medicines can vary by need, but they should reduce your gum pockets over two weeks or so. Your infected gums will then look and feel much better than before. As for the exact antibiotics used, we’ll share that fact (and other key details) at your treatment visit.
