Symptoms of TMJ Disorder
TMJ disorder refers to a number of issues that can occur due to improperly balanced jaw joints. Since these joints (the temporomandibular joints) affect your ability to comfortably chew, yawn, and speak, problems with them need attention. These difficulties can stem from issues like injuries, jaw overuse, misalignment, teeth grinding, etc. To that extent, an unchecked TMJ disorder will lead to negative side effects.
The symptoms of TMJ disorder tend to vary widely. They often include:
- Persistent jaw pain
- Jaw popping or clicking
- Shoulder, neck, or facial pain
- Difficulty opening or closing the mouth
- Headaches and/or migraines
- Changes in how your teeth align (i.e., malocclusion)
- Earaches
- Tinnitus (i.e., a ringing in your ears)
To confirm whether you have TMJ disorder, it’s best to consult our office. Dr. Farruggia can perform a close assessment of your jaw. He’ll then be able to tell how your TMJ is doing.
TMJ Treatment Options
We’ll closely assess your jaw joints and mouth at your consultation visit. Based on your case, we may even take dental X-rays or CBCT images for this process. Either way, we’ll then review our findings and suggest some suitable treatment options.
Occlusal Splints
One way to treat a TMJ disorder is to use an occlusal splint. This device is a type of mouthguard – typically worn at night - that reduces the tension in the muscles surrounding the jaw joints. The longer you wear the splint, the more you would see a reduction in TMJ disorder symptoms.
BOTOX® Injections
BOTOX is primarily a cosmetic service, but it’s also able to treat TMJ disorders. Its injections can be used to relax the various tensed muscles in your face. From there, you’d have relief from jaw pain, headaches, and similar discomforts. Such results most often last for a couple months at a time.
